Eye tracking using low-cost USB and mobile phone cameras
2010/10/12
We developed - initially for a customer and later self-financed - a system for eye tracking using video data from off-the-shelf USB cameras. Initially the system needed a calibration per session. In the mean time there is also a calibration-free version and is also used in our Augmented Reality research for 3D face recognition. The system has the following advantages versus commercially available eye tracking systems that use active sensing (IR leds):
- Hardware cost of about 60 EUR (US$ 85) per eye tracking workplace.
- Test subject can work in their usual environment and their existing computer.
- Even notebooks with integrated cameras and some iPhone/Android mobile phones can be used.
Contact us for a demonstration of the system. Below shows a video with myself and one with six test subjects (for privacy reasons without showing the faces)
